Trip Planning

Idyllwild has almost everything needed for a great climbing adventure. Here are a few of the resources that are typically of greatest interest to climbers.

Camping and lodging

Many camping and lodging options are located in or near Idyllwild- some of the most popular for climbers:

Camping

Idyllwild Regional Park (County Park)
This is a Riverside County Parks campground, located within walking distance of town, with coin-operated showers available. Very popular on weekends, and often fills to capacity. There is good bouldering along the hillside north of the campsites.

Idyllwild State Park Campground
This is a California State Parks campground- it is located very close to town, across the highway from USFS station. Coin-operated showers are available.

Stone Creek Campground
This is also a California State Parks campground, though it is located about 6 miles north of Idyllwild. No showers available.

USFS campgrounds

These campgrounds are located a short driving distance from Idyllwild- here are a few, though others do exist in the area:

Fern Basin Campground

Marion Mountain Campground

USFS Dispersed camping (Yellow Post sites)

There are few legitimate dispersed camping areas in the vicinity, however the Southridge Yellow Post sites tend to be most popular. These sites are close to Idyllwild, and can be popular especially on weekends. There is good bouldering in this vicinity as well. The access road is steep and sometimes rutted, requiring good vehicle clearance, but two-wheel drive is usually sufficient. Winter snows or heavy rains will often result in closure of this road.

Lodging

There are many inns and lodges in the Idyllwild area. See idylodging.com for a good listing of options.

As is the case with many other tourist-oriented towns, there are many short term rental options (i.e. AirBnB) in the Idyllwild area (much to the chagrin of most local residents). When these options are utilized, respect for the local neighbors is much appreciated.

Restaurants and food

Idyllwild has a good general grocery store (Fairway Market)- specialty items are limited and should be obtained elsewhere, but most general food needs are handled well at this market. (See map)

There are a wide range of restaurants in the area that will be of interest to almost any interest or diet. The map below shows a few of the restaurants that tend to be most popular with climbers.

Gear and equipment

Nomad Ventures is the primary (only) source of technical climbing or hiking equipment. This is a small Southern California chain of outdoor retail stores that is well known for carrying quality, modern climbing gear, and having knowledgeable staff on hand to answer questions. They are located very near the center of town (see map).

Guide services

Commercial guiding and operations are permitted by the San Jacinto Ranger District of the San Bernardino National Forest. The Idyllwild Climbers Alliance supports those guiding programs that have obtained Special Use Permits (SUP) to operate in the San Jacinto Mountains. Officially-permitted guiding programs tend to be aligned with the mission of the ICA, and provide climbing instruction and environmental education that support the interest and safety of climbers. The ICA strongly discourages ‘pirate guiding’ organizations that have not obtained proper commercial permits to operate.

To date, guiding programs that hold official Special Use Permits include:
