Report Issues
See Something? Say Something!
Trail obstruction or damage? Bad bolts? Graffiti? The best perspective on the conditions of climbing in the San Jacinto mountains comes from you…
Trail conditions
Trails are in a constant state of degradation from the forces of weather and erosion, oftentimes complicated by poor routing and construction. Most of the trails climbers use in these mountains were created originally through informal use as ‘climber trails’- they tend to be particularly susceptible to deterioration over time.
The Idyllwild Climbers Alliance maintains a listing of trail projects throughout the area, and this listing is used to create target projects for clean up events and efforts. Please report any kind of new trail damage, erosion issues, use trails, or most common issue: deadfall trees blocking access.
Be sure to attach photos with a clear description of location.
Bolts and Climbing hardware
Given the incredible historic nature of climbing at Tahquitz & Suicide Rocks, and the style in which many of the classic routes were established, the hardware that was originally used has required modernizing. Many routes have received this attention over the years, however there are certainly routes (esp. less-commonly climbed routes) that need work. the climbing community (that’s you) is the best set of eyes on these conditions.

Besides bolts, pins and such, software and abandoned gear tends to accumulate in varying locations- the ICA encourages climbers to remove such ‘tat’ slings and gear when climbing. And reporting these conditions is always helpful.

The Idyllwild Climbers Alliance supports the replacement of existing climbing hardware using the highest quality, modern hardware- consistent with the style of the first ascensionist(s). Retro-bolting (without consent of the FA party), or installation of new convenience anchors is strongly discouraged. To accomplish these goals, the ICA works with skilled local practitioners who have strong experience in replacing climbing hardware- and we maintain an important relationship with the American Safe Climbing Association, who provides much of the high quality equipment with which to maintain these routes.

Be sure to include the following information:
- Formation, route, pitch #, bolt #
- Conditions that you observed
- Photos are especially helpful!
Graffiti
Believe it or not, graffiti has been an issue in these mountains, even in more remote places like Tahquitz Rock…

This kind of abuse requires immediate attention, as it tends to attract more of the same. The Idyllwild Climbers Alliance has been involved in numerous removal projects in areas that climbers frequent.
